Ying started learning the piano at the age of 7. Though classically-trained, she discovered a passion for improvisation and has taught pop piano improvisation. She also has much experience performing for weddings since 2008.
To Ying, music is much more than graded examinations but in the discovery of sounds from multiple sources – instruments and genres – and how they complement and work together to form an aural work of art. She focuses on the supporting layers to a melody to identify their characteristics; and distinguishes phrase and chord patterns to recreate them for her performances.
Ying brings this philosophy of experimentation and discovery to her teaching, and allows her students to choose what they want to learn and achieve on the piano, to much of their delight.
